Auckland Arts Festival
This March, Auckland Town Hall will be refashioned into “The Best of All Possible Worlds” for a stunning new production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide.
Sparkling with wit and humour, Candide is part opera, part musical and entirely irreverent, drawing on everything from European operetta to Latin American dance rhythms.
The story follows our hero and his sweetheart, Cunégonde, as they journey through a mad and chaotic world populated by a seemingly endless cast of vicious, greedy, lustful and manipulative characters.
Taking on an array of roles is a brilliant New Zealand and Australian cast, led by the incomparable Reg Livermore in his New Zealand debut. This legend of the Australian stage is joined by Amelia Berry, James Benjamin Rodgers, Jaqueline Dark, Kanen Breen, James Harrison, Robert Tucker and Byron Coll. The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra is conducted by Wyn Davies.
Directed by Stuart Maunder (Tosca, Sweeney Todd, The Mikado) and designed by Tony Award winner Roger Kirk, this celebration of the centenary of Bernstein’s birth promises to be a highlight of the Auckland Arts Festival.
